In Bharati Mukherjee's ââ¬Å"Two Wap to Belong in America,â⬠she diagrams how both her sister and she went to the United States from India with the opes of having a progressively special life. However, she spends the a large portion of her piece depicting the different inconveniences that have climbed, between both herself and her sister, Mira, and how these expenses have influenced their assessments of the American dream. Bharati, specifically, forfeits a lot so as to move, settle, and succeed in the United States. From her piece, I recognized three costs that Bhara ti needed to pay so as to keep on pursuing her fantasy. Bharati's originally cost is her Indian citizenship. While she has no issues with surrendering her Indian citizenship, others rush to desert the inheritance their progenitors have set up. I believe it's recognizable why this is an increasingly significant expense to certain migrants. This carries me to Bharati's second cost which is the vanishing of her genealogical inheritance. Bharati, alongside each foreigner who chose to obtain American citizenship, neglects to comply with her familys set up inheritance because of accepting this citizenship. Once more, she appears to be more than ready to dissuade from the way her family might want her to remain on.In different words, she has no issues ââ¬Å"renouncing 3,000 years (in any event) of standing perceptive, ââ¬Å"pure cultureâ⬠marriage in the Mukherjee family'. First of all, congratulations on being admitted to the University of Illinois. The Illini family is truly like no other, and I want to take the opportunity to welcome you all to it. As offers start coming in from the institutions you have applied to, it is important to start narrowing down your options. A great way to narrow down your search is to visit campuses to determine which institution will be the best fit for you. The Significance of a Campus Visit You more than likely already know why Illinois is an outstanding university, but now is the time to witness it for yourself! When it comes to a good fit, it is critical that you visit each institution that you are considering for a new home. Illinois offers a number of dates to get acquainted with campus and to experience what it means to be an Illini. This spring we will be hosting both Admitted Daily Visits and Illini Days. Admitted Daily Visits happen almost every day, last about 2 1/2 hours, and are smaller in size. Illini Days are large, day-long open-houses offered on just a handful of days. You can register for either option through our Campus Visits page. Accepting Your Offer If you plan to attend Illinois, you are able to accept your offer of admission within your admitted student checklist. This checklist can be accessed through your myIllini account. In order to enroll at Illinois, the deposit will cost $150. Students who qualify and applied using a fee waiver will not be required to pay the enrollment deposit. Although the deadline to accept your offer is May 1, there are several advantages to accepting your offer sooner. For instance, you will be able to set up your new student registration appointment (where youll meet with you academic advisor and select your fall courses) earlier than your peers. You will most likely want to select your fall courses ASAP in order to avoid classes during less preferable hours of the day, like 8 a.m. or 6 p.m. (although some students do prefer these time slots!). Some other benefits of accepting your offer sooner rather than later include starting your housing selection process early, arranging any possible travel plans, and the ability to start connecting with other students and even faculty on social media. Why Choose Illinois? There are plenty of reasons to choose Illinois, one being its unique culture. Illinois boasts a vibrant campus with one of the most diverse student compositions in the Big Ten. Our students bring a wide variety of talents, traditions, and perspectives to campus. With a student body totaling over 45,000 in one location, there is truly never a boring day on campus. Regarding campus, a perfect balance exists between modernized buildings and historical architecture that makes it feel timeless. Illinois is constantly evolving, with a variety of academic buildings, apartment options, and restaurants added each year. Due to the opportunities and resources available, Champaign is one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation. The most paramount feature that makes Illinois so excellent, though, has to be its community of students, faculty, and alumni. Our phenomenal reputation is built upon the innovation, creative solutions, and talents that our students continue to bring to campus every year. Our alumni and faculty consistently provide resources to positively impact society. The proof is in the pudding: Take a look for yourself on our Illini Success website to see the great things our alumni are doing. Once again, congratulations on your admission. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to leave a comment or give our office a call. But for now, go ahead and celebrate, and know that our admissions staff is right beside you celebrating as well! The content of preaching has been emphasized and studied in Seminaries, but the method for effective preaching has been treated in generalities. Now it is the time to think more specifically about processes which can help the preacher deliver biblical and powerful sermons that transform the lives of the hearers. One such process is that involving human imagination in relation to the exegesis and exposition of biblical texts for preaching. This thesis attempts to define exegesis, to present the foundation of imagination, and to give examples of the proper use of imagination in the Bible and by great preachers, contrasting these with the misuse of imagination. Finally, the thesis lays out the role of imagination in preaching and in the mind of the audience. A preacher needs a balance between the honest exegesis of the text and practical application of the truth. For this balance sanctified imagination, which is a work of the Holy Spirit, plays an important role. Sanctified imagination functions in an interaction between Godââ¬â¢s part (revelation) which is exegeted (observed and interpreted) and the creation part (our exposition and application), in the process of making the sermon, thus bridging the gap between the bible times and today. Understanding of Godââ¬â¢s Word must precede the creative aspect in sermonizing. Without honest exegesis, preaching can be neither biblical nor powerful. But without theShow MoreRelatedIs Image Is Everything?1312 Words à |à 6 Pagesof using words and actions to reveal the elements and images of a story while encouraging the listener s imagination, it is interactive. Baskerville appears to have been a man driven by a sense of perfectionism, and strongly influenced by his earlier careers in related industries. It was these unique qualities that drove the creation of the long-lasting Baskerville font, that is still widely used in the modern day. John Baskerville was born in England in 1706. Early in his life he was a ââ¬Å"writing masterâ⬠, but later went on to make a fortune in the japanning business before finally finding his vocation as a printer 1750. A major influence on these works was the type of William Caslon who was responsible for the most popular typefaces of the time. In his preface for second printed book, Baskerville clearly states his admiration for Caslon: ââ¬Å"Mr. Caslon is an Artist, to whom the Republic of Learning has great obligations; his ingenuity has left a fairer copy for my emulation than any other master. In his great variety of Characters I intend not to follow him; the Roman and Italic are all that I have hitherto attempted; if in these he has left room for improvement, it is probably more owing to that variety which divided his attention, than to any other cause. The story begins in the foothills of Salinas, California, in the middle of the Great Depression. Throughout this entire novel, there are many examples of loneliness. Steinbeck stresses the theme of loneliness through the characters working on the ranch, particularly Crooks, Candy, and Curleys wife. George and Lennie are two ranch hands that travel together, with George watching over the mentally inferior Lennie. When they start work at a new ranch, several different characters are introduced. One affliction that seems to face several characters is loneliness, created by factors such as the characterââ¬â¢s lifestyles and by social standards of the time period. The book begins with a calm and peaceful setting of nature. ââ¬ËA few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops close to the hill-side and runs deeps and green. The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool. This shows the peaceful world of nature, it is very calm and tranquil. The pool shows signs of innocence, as it are only a branch of the Salinas River. The river is a sign of the secrets and the future in nature and the novel. The deep green makes it unable to see the riverbed; this shows signs of a faint and perhaps a dangerous view of the future. Despite the movement and the motion of the river, there are still signs of loneliness; there is only the c yclical of nature. The language Steinbeck uses to describe the setting is sophisticated and formal. This underlying theme is first introduced in the novel when George talks to Lennie about the advantage they have over other travelling workers of the time. Steinbeck presents the theme of loneliness through the characters. The language he uses to describe the landscape and characters show signs of loneliness. The characterââ¬â¢s past reflect their loneliness and the death of both Candyââ¬â¢s dog and Lennie create the major theme of loneliness. Nature and animals play a large role in the story, the main comparison of man and nature is when Lennie is described as a bear. George described how other ranch hands like themselves who travelled alone had nothing to look forward to, and no one to look after them. He told Lennie how other workers would just work up a stake and blow it at a bar because they had no where else to go, no one else to look after them. George and Lennie share a bond so strong that when one is destroyed, the other inevitably is as well. Steinbeck often stresses how ranchers are loners, and George and Lennie are the only ones who travel in pairs. They seem to be two halves of the same person, and they know how special together they truly are. Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world They got no family. They dont belong no place They aint got nothing to look ahead to With us, it aint like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us . George appreciates Lennieââ¬â¢s friendship because he knows that being alone can lead to a more negative view on life. Towards the end of section one, before George and Lennie reach the ranch, they camp for the night in a beautiful clearing and George assures Lennie of their special relationship. In this passage, George explains their friendship, which forms the heart of the novel. One of the first friends they make on arrival at the new ranch is a man named Candy. Candy is another character who deals with loneliness. He is the oldest man on the ranch and is disabled. The only work he can do is cleaning out the bunkhouse and other odd jobs. His only companion is his old dog who stays by his side. His only company, his faithful, old, blind, toothless dog, is stripped away from him and killed. Now left with nothing Candy fears that he will be treated the same way in the future and begs Lennie and George to let him work on their future ranch. Candy says, I wont have no place to go, an I cant get no more jobs. Candy says this because he knows after he gets canned he wont have anything to live for, he will just live out in the country all by himself. After Carlson shot Candyââ¬â¢s dog, reality hit because he canââ¬â¢t work because of his missing hand and he lost his only friend he had for years. When candy was ease dropping on George and Lennieââ¬â¢s conversation about their future plans when they get enough money, he was eager to join and help out because he had nothing left at the ranch for example ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d make a will anââ¬â¢ leave my share to you guys incase I kick off, cause I ainââ¬â¢t got no relatives nor nothingâ⬠(59). This quote relates to loneliness because once Candy dies, he doesnââ¬â¢t have no family or friends to leave his belongings to and thereââ¬â¢s nothing else on the ranch Candy can do so he might as well leave with George and Lennie. Crooks is an African American who experiences loneliness and isolation in the ranch. First of all, Crooks fascination to George and Lennies friendship demonstrates his loneliness and solitude. As Crooks says hesitatingly, If you guys would want a hand to work for nothingââ¬âjust his keep, why Id come an lend a hand. I aint so crippled I cant work like a son-of-a-bitch if I want to. (76). Crooks shows that he can do everything to be with others. Crooks aspires to find a friendship by joining the dream of George and Lennie, to live off the fatta the lan' (14) with them. This is Crooks desperate attempt to make friends and be with others in order to overcome the loneliness and isolation he faces in the ranch. Moreover, the the jealousy and curiosity of George and Lennies friendship lead to Crooks desire to make friends with Lennie. Crooks expresses his loneliness and anguish to Lennie, A guy goes nuts if he aint got nobody. Dont make no difference who the guy is, longs hes with you. I tell ya a guy gets too lonely and he gets sick. (72). Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is one of the loneliest characters in the novel; she has no identity, she is seen as an object, a possession of Curleyââ¬â¢s She wants attention and by gaining that attention, she act the way people think. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife tries to talk to somebody besides her own husband, whom she can never find, but everybody in the ranch refuses, due to her husbandââ¬â¢s reactions and anger problems when somebody tries to talk to her. She likes to dress up and wear a lot of make up, to attract the men. The men on the other hand do not flirt with her, as they are afraid of what Curly might do. For example Curleyââ¬â¢s wife was trying to talk to Lennie when he was alone in the barn but Lennie refuses because George warns him about her. ââ¬Å"I get lonely, you can talk to people but I canââ¬â¢t talk to nobody but curlyâ⬠(87). This quotation relates to loneliness because no one, not even Lennie, will have a conversation with Curleyââ¬â¢s wife and thatââ¬â¢s all she pleads for. Like Curleyââ¬â¢s wife, Crooks also has no name, it is just a nickname the other ranch-hands use because he is crippled. He is intelligent and very well organised; he has his own room where he keeps his books and possessions. For him, his room is a haven or an oasis. ââ¬ËFor, being alone, Crooks could leave his things aboutâ⬠¦this room was swept and fairly neat, for Crooks was a proud, aloof man. ââ¬â¢ This shows signs of isolation, as there is no one to comment on the tidiness of his room. He feels isolated and bitter. He is the victim of oppressive violence and prejudice on the ranch. When he first meets Lennie, there is an immediate rejection of friendship mainly due to the anguish of his loneliness. ââ¬ËWell, I got a right to have a light. You go on get outa my room. I ainââ¬â¢t wanted in the bunkhouse, and you ainââ¬â¢t wanted in my room. ââ¬â¢ He does not know that Lennie is unlike the other men, he has been criticised and made fun off, so he does not appreciate the company of others until he gets to know them and their attitude towards him. He tells Lennie of his hopes of having some one to talk to. ââ¬ËI tell ya a guy gets too lonely, anââ¬â¢ he gets sick. ââ¬â¢ He admits to feeling isolated, he wishes for a friend to talk to. For a moment, Lennie seems to be a new friend, Lennie sees Crooks as an individual, a person in his own right. Crooks respects him for this and is excited about his new companionship. Again the reader only finds this out when Crooks tells Lennie about his feelings. Crooks admits to not having a dream as he is afraid of disappointment, he does however get caught up in working with George and Lennie in the dream farm. His hopes are shattered by Georgeââ¬â¢s dismissive attitude. ââ¬ËI didnââ¬â¢ mean it. Jus foolinââ¬â¢. I wouldnââ¬â¢t want to go no place like that. ââ¬â¢ The lonely characters feel they can confide in Lennie, as they know he will not tell anyone. Crooks is treated as an outcast due to the perspective of race and black people of the time. Black people were seen as outcasts that had no right to mix with the whites. Curley is a small ex-boxer. He is one of the most violent characters on the ranch. He hopes that by being violent and aggressive towards the weaker characters, he will gain authority. He however avoids those he considers to be strong and with authority, such as Slim. He sees everyone with a lower status and sees people as a ladder. Through this novel, Steinbeck illustrates the loneliness results from racial discrimination and prejudice in ranch life during that time period. He demonstrates that the extreme loneliness would eventually lead to peoples desperate attempts at making friends. Loneliness, is humans major enemy that caused by discrimination and prejudice among humans. Only friendship can prevent humans from suffering from loneliness. stevejacobs1991http://www.blogger.com/profile/06453104950734171691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2481730798355931484.post-61999215137882642002020-03-20T22:29:00.001-07:002020-03-20T22:29:03.224-07:00Aggregate PlanningAggregate Planning Aggregate planning is a very critical tool for both manufacturing and services companies. It is concerned with determining the quantity and timing of production in order to meet forecasted demand at the lowest cost possible and by maintaining the quality of the product at the same time. Aggregate planning is the functional role of operational managers. It involves making scheduling decisions that address issues of matching production to meet changes in demand (Heizer and Render, p. 512).Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on Aggregate Planning specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Aggregate planning entails controlling of inventories, production rates, number of workers, production capacity, and other production variables. The elements are achieved through various strategy options that classified as either capacity options or demand options (Heizer and Render, p. 514). There are various capacity option strategies that ope ration managers in manufacturing and some services firms can utilize in aggregate planning to meet demand forecasts in future. Changing inventory level strategy is a capacity option where the manager makes adjustments in the level of inventory in order to meet future demand. Some operations managers can match firm production rate requirements. The other strategy is varying of production rates through overtime or idle time. Firms operations department may also use subcontracting strategy option so as to acquire short term capacity requirements during peak demand periods (Heizer and Render, p. 515). The last capacity strategy that can be utilized by operations managers is the use of part-time workers. Influencing demand is a demand strategy that firms try to increase demand for their product through advertising, personal selling, discounts, and promotions. Companies can also use ââ¬Å"back orderingâ⬠during high demand periods (Heizer and Render, p. 516) as aggregate planning s trategy. Finally, firms can also use counter-seasonal product and service mixing as one of the demand option (Heizer and Render, p. 517). Operations managers utilize a number of aggregate planning techniques. The most popular technique is the graphical approach that is easy to understand it contains few variables. The other methods are mathematical approaches that tend to give optimal plans in minimizing cost and revenues (Heizer and Render, p. 524). Introduction The world population including the population in Saudi Arabia is growing at a rapid pace. The established and known reserves of fossil fuel is depleting fast. It has been imperative on the part of scientist and engineers to think of alternate sources of energy to meet the increasing demand. With the rising population demand of water is increasing too. Saudi Arabia has no natural sources of water supply except the water stored in aquifers. For these reasons, the Saudi Arabia has undertaken several projects for the development of renewable sources of energy. This study explores the possibility of harnessing solar energy for the purpose of desalination of water in Saudi Arabia. Radiation Measurement in Saudi Arabia According to one research report, the average solar radiat ion in Saudi Arabia is noticed as 5591 Watt hour on unit square meter area. The data collected are from 41 stations in the period of 10 years. (Mohandas et al, 1999) The solar radiation measurement in Saudi Arabia is now available for 10 major towns namely Tabuk, Al-Ula, Unayxah, Shaqra, Dawdami, Yabrin, Turabah, Heifa, Kwash, and Najran. Though all the locations offer promising solar radiation but the area of Najran is found to be the best. The method used is called radial basis function neural networks. (Mohandas et al, 1999) Solar energy and duration of sunshine is not the same throughout the year. As per the Solar Radiation Atlas the radiation is found to be in the range of 4.1 and 6.7 kilowatt-hour /sq. meter / day. (Alnaser et al., 2004) An Overview of Desalination Process in Saudi Arabia The current market share of the Saudi Arabia in the production of desalinated water is about 30 percent when viewed with respect to the global capacity installed. In last 80 years the Saudi A rabia has spent almost $25 billion on building and operating desalination plants. The kingdom now has 30 desalination units and the country has more than quadrupled its food production. It can be said that Saudi Arabia has turned into a modern nation in the last 25 years. A more than 50 percent water need of a resident in any city of the kingdom is met through Desalinated technology. (Water Demand, 2010) Supply and Demand Scenario of Water in Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia is mostly desert area devoid of any lakes or rivers. Saudi has limited water resources. The groundwater, stored in several aquifers across the country, is the main source that satisfies more than 90% of its water demand. Available Water Resources in Saudi Arabia, 2010 Source of Water In Million Cubic Meters Surface water (Renewable) 5000 (2230 available for use) Groundwater resources 2,269,000 (84,000 renewable water in shallow aquifers) Groundwater recharge (Renewable) 3,958 (1,196 in shallow aquifers and 2,762 in dee p aquifers) Desalination 1050 Treated Wastewater 400 Source: http://www.miahona.com/upload/publications/2010_Walid_SWPF-2010_Jeddah.pdf (p 18) The government of Saudi Arabia has been making great efforts to secure the water supplies for all purposes; some of them include such as dams, distribution systems, wastewater collection and treatment facilities in most cities and towns of the kingdom along with large sea stevejacobs1991http://www.blogger.com/profile/06453104950734171691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2481730798355931484.post-53348235250314100002020-02-03T05:11:00.001-08:002020-02-03T05:11:03.820-08:00Retail Industry in the UK Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 wordsRetail Industry in the UK - Essay Example In the year 2010, the industry was responsible for the creation of additional 12,750 full time jobs and the total number of jobs increased by 2.1% in comparison with the previous year. The total number of people employed by the industry in the year 2010 was 2.9 million which roughly accounts for the 11% of the total workforce in the UK. From this fact, it can be inferred that the retail industry holds a very prominent position in the economy of the UK. From economic activity to employment, the retail industry affects a number of factors in the economy of the UK. In 2010, there were 286,680 retail outlets in the UK and the number has grown in the year 2011. More than a third of the total consumer spending the region goes through shops. Retail industry generates around 5% of the Gross Domestic Product of the UK. Consumers are also taking interest in shopping over internet and the sales over internet account for around 7% of the total retail sales and the number is estimated to grow sig nificantly. FINDINGS Retail industry is one of the strongest industries in the UK. The industry has witnessed significant growth in the recent years. Every industry is influenced by certain economic and social factors and in case of retail industry the most important economic factor is inflation. With the rise in inflation, the prices of consumer products also rise. Thus the consumers refrain from buying and the overall retail sales go down. Other social factors that may influence the retail industry may be the prevailing trends in clothing and the weather conditions. Such are the indicators that help the retailers take steps proactively in order to save themselves from any significant impact. The following review of the retail industry in the UK would also focus on the impact of such economic and social factors in the last quarter of the year 2011.... REVIEW OF RETAIL INDUSTRY FOR THE LAST QUARTER OF 2011 The start of the last quarter of 2011 was slow for the retail industry in the UK however the sales grew significantly towards the end of the quarter. There were a number of economic and other factors responsible for the trend of sales observed in the last quarter of 2011. One of the most important factors behind this trend of sales volume was Christmas which always impacts the retail industry positively. A boost in the internet sales was also witnessed in this quarter. Following is the month by month review of the retail industry in the UK for the last quarter of 2011. Retail Industry in October 2011 The overall retail sales volume increased by 0.6% in the month of October as compared to the previous month. This increase was higher than what was expected by the economists. The absence of any social factors to cause an increase in the sales volume led the economists to estimate a decline in the sales volume in comparison with the previous month but the sales volume increased. The benefit of this increase in sales was enjoyed mostly by the small retailers while the large stores had to lose their overall sales stevejacobs1991http://www.blogger.com/profile/06453104950734171691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2481730798355931484.post-64329531166300155482020-01-26T01:35:00.001-08:002020-01-26T01:35:06.441-08:00Analysing The Hellenization Of Christianity Religion EssayAnalysing The Hellenization Of Christianity Religion Essay At the time of the Early EkklÃâââ¬Å"sia there was an ongoing conflict between Hebrew Judaism and Hellenic Judaism. The Maccabean war of independence, fought through to 139 BCE, wasnt just about foreign rule, but also about those Jews embracing Hellenism, a civil war, as it were, between Orthodox and Hellenistic Judaism. Hellenic Judaism was the fusing and harmonization of Greek philosophy and Judaism, where the practices of both Jewish exegesis and Stoic philosophy were followed. Those propagating this Hellenistic Philosophy included the Jewish philosopher Philoi of Alexandria (20 BCE 50 CE ). Hellenistic Philosophy, as espoused by Philo, was enthusiastically received by the early Gentile Christians, some of whom saw him as a cryptic Christian. Some today believe his concept of the Logosii as Gods creative principle influenced early Christology.iii Mainstream Judaism rejecting Hellenistic currents eventually (at the Council of Jamnia in 90 CE) prohibited the use of the Septuagintiv, leaving the Masoreticv as the only authoritative Hebrew text of the Jewish Bible. Antecedent to this, the Apostolic Decree of circa 48 CE (Acts 15) allowing converts to forgo circumcision made Christianity a more attractive option for interested Pagans than Pharisaic/Rabbinic Judaism which, in response to this quickly-growing Netzarim Judaism, instituted an even more stringent circumcision procedure in response. Hellenistic Judaism continue in existence until Constantine adopted Christianity as the official State religion. Remaining currents of Hellenistic Judaism in all probability, as would be expected, merged into gnostic movements in the early centuries CE. The Hellenization of Christianity was a complex interaction between Hellenistic philosophy and early Christianity during the first four centuries of the Common Era. The initial conflict between these two modes of thought is recorded in scripture; in Pauls encounters with Epicurean and Stoic philosophers in Acts 17:18, his diatribe against Greek philosophy in 1st Corinthians 1:18-31, and his warning against philosophy in Colossians 2:8vi. Over time, however, as Christianity spread throughout the Hellenic world, an increasing number of church leaders were educated in Greek philosophy. The dominant philosophical traditions of the Greco-Roman world at the time were Stoicism, Platonism, and Epicureanism. Of these, Stoicism and particularly Platonism were readily incorporated into Christian ethics and theology. Philos blend of Judaism, Platonism, and Stoicismvii strongly influenced Christian Alexandrian writers like Origen and Clement of Alexandria, as well as, in the Latin world, Ambrose of Milan. Clement of Alexandria, early Christian writer of the second and early third century, demonstrated Greek thought in writing: Philosophy has been given to the Greeks as their own kind of Covenant, their foundation for the philosophy of Christ the philosophy of the Greeks contains the basic elements of that genuine and perfect knowledge which is higher than human even upon those spiritual objects. (Miscellanies 6. 8) The Church historian Eusebius, c. 263-339 CE, suggested, essentially, that Greek philosophy had been supplied providentially as a preparation for the Gospel. Augustine of Hippo, who ultimately systematized Christian philosophy, wrote in the 4th and early fifth century: But when I read those books of the Platonists I was taught by them to seek incorporeal truth, so I saw your invisible things, understood by the things that are made. (Confessions 7. 20). This Greek pagan philosophy, now deeply entrenched and mixed within Christian theology, has persisted through the centuries becoming the foundation of Western thought and culture. Many today often blindly view the founding fathers of the United States as purely Christian. One of the most common statements from the Religious Right is that they want this country to; return to the Christian principles on which it was founded. However, even a little research into American history will show that this statement is unfounded and based on a false premise. The men responsible for building the foundation of the United States had little use for Christianity, and many were strongly opposed to it. They were men of The Enlightenment, not men of Christianity. They were Deistsviii who did not believe the bible was inspired truth. Indubitably, the US Constitution is a masterpiece of civil law providing for, among other things, the protection of religious beliefs against Governmental intrusion allowing the free exercise thereof, while at the same time wonderfully preventing the establishment of religious domination via state sanctioned religion. It was the latter of these two concepts that most concerned the signers of the Declaration of Independence and Framers of the Constitution, with but tolerance of the former. They wanted to ensure that no single religion could make the claim of being the official, national religion, such as was the case in England. The cultural climate of the time was one in which freedom from the religious domination of the Church of England and Catholicism was desired by the masses, which provided a perfect habitat for those of the Enlightenment. The 1796 treaty with Tripoli states that the United States was in no sense founded on the Christian religion. This was not an idle statement, meant to satisfy Muslims they believed it and meant it. This treaty was written under the presidency of George Washington and signed under the presidency of John Adams. None of the Founding Fathers were known atheists. Most were Deists, which is to say they thought the universe had a creator, but that he does not concern himself with the daily lives of humans, and does not directly communicate with humans, either by revelation or by sacred books. They spoke often of God, (Natures God or the God of Nature), but this was not the God of the Bible. They did not deny that there was a person called Jesus, and praised him for his benevolent teachings, but they flatly denied his divinity. These Founders of the Constitution were students of the European Enlightenmentix. Thomas Jefferson author of the Declaration of Independence and the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, third president of the United States, historian, philosopher, plantation owner, and founder of the University of Virginia voiced the aspirations of a new America as no other individual of his era. He also in his writings voiced his beliefs: As you say of yourself, I too am an Epicurian. I consider the genuine (not the imputed) doctrines of Epicurus as containing everything rational in moral philosophy which Greece and Rome have left us. Epictetus indeed, has given us what was good of the stoics; I take the liberty of observing that you are not a true disciple of our master Epicurus, in indulging the indolence to which you say you are yielding. One of his canons, you know, was that the indulgence which prevents a greater pleasure, or produces a greater pain, is to be avoided. Jeffersons letter to William Short, from Monticello, October 31, 1819. But while this syllabus is meant to place the character of Jesus in its true and high light, as no impostor himself, but a great Reformer of the Hebrew code of religion, it is not to be understood that I am with Him in all His doctrines. I am a Materialist; he takes the side of Spiritualism; he preaches the efficacy of repentance towards forgiveness of sin; Jeffersons letter to William Short, from Monticello August 4, 1820. That being said, it is easy to see that the aforementioned tolerance of religious freedom, was in reality a bulwark for the benefit of The Enlightenment, not the Pious, and in this age that bulwark being no longer necessary is coming to an end. For two-hundred plus years we, in this United States of America, have enjoyed freedom of Religion so that those of the Enlightenment could enjoy their freedom from Religion. But figuratively speaking, the air of tolerance toward Judeo-Christian beliefs is wisping away, leaving the putrid stench of moral corruption and malicious bigotry toward anyone who identifies with Yeshua and the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. But know this, that in the last days grievous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, railers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, implacable, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, no lovers of good, traitors, headstrong, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power thereof [emphasisà added]: from these also turn away. (2Timothy 3:1-5). Like the parable of the Kingdom of Heaven of Matt 13; at the founding of the United States of America two seeds were sown. Two hundred years later in these last days the two seeds have grown to maturity. And now the tares are fully distinguishable from the wheat. For the American believers there has been a two-hundred year bastion of grace, to grow into the maturity of the Word, and to shine above the philosophies of this world. And now you see, God had afforded us a little more time in these last days to fulfill His purposes. Not waring in the flesh but; pulling down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought into the obedience of Christ (2Cor. 10:5 MKJV) . For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Master craftsmen during the Medieval Ages created items needed for the kingdom to thrive. Craftsmen included candle makers, shoemakers, and farmers, but the most famous craftsmen were blacksmiths, carpenters, and masons. Every type of craftsmen were in groups called guilds and every guild needed to cooperate. If one guild failed to meet its needs, then the whole medieval structure will fail, causing the kingdom to fall. Carpenters, masons, and blacksmiths were important craftsmen in building castles and villages and you had to go through apprenticeship for many years before becoming one of the three master craftsmen. Many children are subjected to neglect and abuse on a daily basis. The sex and age of child makes no difference when it comes to child abuse.. Boys and girls are equally likely to suffer maltreatment. The problem is how often child abuse goes unreported. Millions of children across the world are abused in some way, whether it is verbal, emotional, physical or sexual. Child abuse has been happening all over the world to young children, however many children keep this a secret because of fear of what could happen. Humiliation, judging, criticizing and degradation are just some forms of emotional abuse. Verbal abuse is not the same, but can identify with the silent scars as emotional abuse. These kinds of abuses will interfere with a childââ¬â¢s development and may be more likely to have self-esteem issues than most children. The physiological effect will ultimately damage a bond between the child, and the attacker. Physical abuse is a non-accidental trauma which can refer to fractures or any other physical sign on the childââ¬â¢s body. Many children will have bruises, cuts, burns, and even bite marks. Physical child abuse is seldom ever a single event. Usually it occurs often and increasing in violence. A child abuser is usually close to the child, usually, but not all cases, a parent or guardian. Often the child feels they deserve this harsh punishment and most have very low self-esteem. The luminous amber streetlights outside twitched as they projected a silhouette of tall, lofty trees prancing in the serene wind through my windows onto me. The sky was clear and the stars were easily visible as they twinkled through the night. I felt like I had forgotten to do something and my brain wouldnââ¬â¢t stop reminding, but what was it reminding me? Thatââ¬â¢s the question. I tried to ignore it but my mind wouldnââ¬â¢t stop sensing a feel of discomfort. I finally decided to get up and try to resolve the matter and investigate what was going on. I approached my door and just before I went to grasp the door handle I felt a slight shock run through the palm of my right hand. I abruptly pulled away and froze for a minute. It was dark and gloomy in my room so I decided to turn on the lights. With caution I flicked on the light switch and was surprised to not feel any more shocks. the luminous light bulb from the ceiling of my room glistened so luminously that I went blind for a few seconds and I just stood there rubbing my eyelids as they couldnââ¬â¢t cope with the sudden illumination of the room. Feel quite dizzy, I continued to attempt to open the door. I vigilantly stretched out to reach for the door handle again and this time I successfully held it firmly without any shocks. Maybe it was just my mind playing up with me? I mean, it was 3am in the morning and I wasnââ¬â¢t feeling too bothered as I investigated what felt wrong. I twisted the door handle but it didnââ¬â¢t open. I tried to twist it open again but it didnââ¬â¢t seem to open. At this point I was furious; I took a deep breath and pinched myself to make sure this wasnââ¬â¢t just another horrid dream, unfortunately it wasnââ¬â¢t. I took a big step back away from my door and charged towards it whilst I firmly clutched the handle and dragged it mightily. It still didnââ¬â¢t open. I roared in fury. I screamed for my parents but I got no reply. I repeated but this time for my siblings but I stood there without a response. No words could explain the rage I was in. I shrieked once more and I irately jolted my door which countered with a massive bruise to my foot . I fell to my feet with my head on the ground, tears recklessly flowing down my face. This wasnââ¬â¢t the day for someone to mess with me, not at all. I got back up on my feet and as I loomed towards the window, I heard a whisper which said ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s just you and meâ⬠in a sonorous demonic voice followed by an awkward cackle. I brusquely stopped and jumped with fear. I hastily dived under my bed and snatched the broad metal pole I had hidden under there. I got back up and spent 2 or so minutes inspecting my room looking to see if by any chance it was anyone. Was it my conscience? Was it something outside? Or was it really some sort of spectre really talking to me? I scuttled to my open window and took a pro longed gaze outside to see if anyone was outâ⬠¦there was nobody. It was an opaque, pitch black night with the white stars twinkling above. The roads were ever so quiet. Who would be out at this time? I guess I did hear something after all, 3am in the morning and my mind seems to be playing with me; I couldnââ¬â¢t even open the door to go and get some water or anything else refreshing. I turned away from the window to retry the door againâ⬠¦and I heard a really deafening thump. I jerked in fright and my heart was thumping so hard that I could see it beating out of my t shirt. I gradually rotated myself towards the direction of the noise with my heart in my hands. All four windows in my room had pounded shut. Coincidence? Iââ¬â¢m starting not to think so. I stood there in awkward silence for a good 5 minutes. Why me? I stepped foot to approach the windows and the lights flicked off. I squealed worse than those in an intense horror movie; this wasnââ¬â¢t no movie this was reality and I donââ¬â¢t know what was happening. I couldnââ¬â¢t see anything but a slight shadow of something behind me, shortly after that I felt a cold, icy hand on my shoulder. As I turned around, my vision instantly went blurry and I couldnââ¬â¢t see much but I could see something similar to a white spirit with gleaming red eyes. I fainted. This paper besides analyzed whether the US-à ?China relation can be categorized as a complex mutuality. To analyse this instance. the author used complex mutuality construct from Robert Keohane and Joseph Nye which could explicate the complexness of US-à ?China relation. The author used 3 indexs harmonizing to Keohane and Nye to analyze whether US-à ? China relation can be categorized as a complex mutuality. The indexs are: 1 ) The usage of multiple channels between societies in interstate. trans-à ?governmental. and multinational dealingss ; 2 ) The absence of hierarchy among issues ; 3 ) The diminution of utilizing military force towards other authorities to accomplish terminals. In this paper. the author found that a complex mutuality happened between these two major powers. With large scope of issues and complex relation between them. cooperation brought benefits for both parties but conflictual and competition were non decidedly eliminated. Politicss Among States: the battle for power and peace ( New York: McGraw-à ?Hill. 1993 ) hal. 2 Ada 3 karakteristik yang digunakan oleh Keohane dan Nye untuk mendeksripsikan complex mutuality. yaitu: 1 ) Adanya berbagai alur yang menghubungk an masyarakat antar negara. antar-à ?pemerintah. juga hubungan transnasional ; Purpose: To see if their is an effect on golf ball EssayBahkan dalam beberapa tahun terakhir. Mentions: DAFTAR PUSTAKA Morgenthau. Hans. J A ; Thompson. Kenneth. Five years later, the company became a locally owned entity after Mr. Thio and his family bought over the Australian interest in the company. MDI become the first manufacturer of evaporated milk and cultured milk in Singapore and Malaysia. Besides, it also the first to produce 100% fruit juice in both countries. Later, the company also became the first to install an Alfa-Laval UHT Steritherm plant in Asia. In 1994, MDI received the ISO 9002 certificate for Quality Management System in Production and Installation. Over the last decade, MDI has seen a tremendous growth in demand for its perishable products. Demands for pasteurised products have increased form 50,000 litres per month to more than 1.3 million litres per month today. At the same time, Vitagen has become so popular among peoples especially children, that lead MDI has had to expand production capacity to meet the growing demands. Therefore, a trend of continued growth leading well into the next century is expected. As MDI prepares to this growth, it has already built a 5-storey extension to its headquarters to provide greater capacity and scope for manufacturing in the future. While Malaysia Milk Sdn Bhd, its Malaysian subsidiary has also completed its sophisticated new building to meet the needs of the Malaysian consumers. Besides, MDIs research and development laboratory has always played an important role in MDI and especially so in the last few years in order to manufacture products that meet its high standards. In todays environment, companies are operating in an uncertain and turbulent environment, especially due to the US war that will be launch soon. The firms will experiences very high uncertainty while external environmental factors change rapidly. This is because the firms do not have sufficient information about environmental factors to understand and predict environmental needs and changes. Moreover, It will reduce the planning horizon because if the firm operates in an uncertain environment, its management is unlikely to develop plans for more than a few years ahead as they accept that will be subject to large margins of error. Thus, MDI must respond by designing its firm to adapt to the external environment and to influence that environment. The external environment for any organisation includes all elements existing outside the boundary of the organisation that have the potential to affect the organisation, which are the Political, Economic, Social cultural and Technological. Political The political dimension that affects MDI includes government regulations at the local, state, and federal levels as well as political activities designed to influence company behaviour. For the entire product, which produce by the MDI shall in all other aspects comply with the requirements of the legislation that currently enforced in Malaysia i.e. The Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985 which set product standards and particular labelling requirements for milk and milk based products. Each product may by arrangement with a recognised certification body, be marked with the certification mark of that body, provided the product conforms to the requirements of this Malaysian Standard. On the other hand, dairy imports such as milk powder, cheese and butter are required to be certified halal by the Malaysian religious authority, for direct consumption and usage as ingredients for further processing. An import license, issued by the Department of Veterinary Services and Ministry of Int ernational Trade and Industry is necessary for consignments of dairy products entering into Malaysia. Economic The economic represent the general economic health of the country or region in which the organization operates. With the uncertainties over the economy in 2001 and 2002 which due to the war on terrorism since last year, there was softness in demand of dairy product in the local dairy market. The environment today became more turbulent as the terrorism happens everywhere such as the explosion that take place in the Bali in Indonesia, and the Philippine city of Zamboanga. (See appendix about more current issue) Besides, US president was declared to launch war with the Iraq. If this situation takes place, it will mainly affect our economic growth, especially in the Asian countries because the economic problems in US have had a significant impact on the Asian countries as well as the stock market. The world dairy raw material prices will increase due to the inflation of the countries. The dairy product price will therefore increase due to the high cost of raw material. The consumer purch asing power also affect here that the demand of the milk product will be reduces. The consumer may go for select the substitute product which was cheaper than the milk product e.g. soya bean. The unemployment may also take place due to the downturn of economic. Social Cultural The social cultural dimension of the general environment represents the demographic characteristics as well as the norms, customs and value of the general population. In order to meet the consumer satisfaction, MDI have to consider needs of the consumer based on their attitude, taste, age, and the family size. For instance, for the milk it self, it should aimed at various sections of the market i.e. pregnant women, breast feeding mothers, toddlers, children, adolescents, slimmers, active adults, pensioners. For example, a fruit yogurt in Thailand emphasizes health and low calories and is targeted at young women; in Europe, a drinking yogurt in a bright container and featuring a cartoon character on the packaging is aimed at children; elsewhere, a drinking yogurt fortified with vitamins is aimed at active women between the ages of 30 and 40. In this respect, it often seems as if a product is available for every age and occasion. On the other hand, the family also one of the factors affects the producing of milk product. For example, standard packaging of milk in litre and half-litre containers, is well adapted to home consumption, but not well adapted to competing with soft drinks sold from vending machines. For this market, the size of the packaging needs to change (often to between 200 and 350 ml) to encourage sales of milk products, such as flavored milk and chilled coffee, which can compete with soft drinks. Technological Technological dimension includes scientific and technological advancements in a specific industry as well as in society at large. This factor will also affect MDI since the company is using new technology equipment to develop their innovative products. With unceasingly introducing of new technology will be able to develop the innovative products with high quality and high standards. Globalisation means an adherence to universal business principles and practices, which are recognized, respected and understood by the regional and global corporate communities. It is regardless of goods and services that flow across international borders and across vast oceans with few impediments. This also a process which tends to increase the interdependence between national economies. Global markets could offer greater opportunity for people to tap into more and larger markets around the world. It means that they can have access to more capital flows, technology, cheaper imports, and larger export markets. It can be seen, as a movement towards the formation of a single market for goods and services, in which there is no discrimination based on the geographical origin of producers and consumers. Rules of business are changing rapidly and if management is not sensitive to change, their business will be severely affected. Therefore, to survive in the market place, management will h ave no choice but to quickly adapt to continuous changes of globalisation to remain competitive. Opportunity and Threat Today the will to constantly upgrade and to stay at the frontier of the industry remain the key to the companys vision. To meet the challenges ahead, MDI is focusing on the vision which will cover every aspect of business, involving every member of its staff and at every level of the company. Thus, such vision and the principles such as ISO, HACCP become the guiding lights that will plot the companys course in the future. The opportunity to take part in the emerging global economy will also comes to the company. The company will not only establish himself in Malaysia and Singapore but also in other Asia countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, and Myanmar etc. However, over recent months, there had been increasing concern over the global economic slowdown, which was most clearly seen in the US and to a lesser extent, in Europe and some countries in Asia. Apparently, the events of Sept 11 had a significant impact on the global business activities. Foreign direct investment worldwide has declined by nearly 50%, indicating a lack of consumer and investor in the light of growing uncertainties in the global business and geo-political environment. This may become one of the threats to MDI in developing its global business. The company also face tough challenge in competitive environment because the competition in the global market is intense, with several major producers vying for the market share. In order to help the company understand their competitive advantage or disadvantage relative to competitors, and to give an informed basis for developing future strategies to sustain or establish advantage over competitors, competitor analysis of the following are necessary here. Competitor Analysis Porter argue that competition in an industry is determined by its basic underlying economic structure, which are the following five force models: * Rivalry among existing competitors The competitor strategic would be one of the main factors to influence the business of MDI. Competitors such as Dutch Lady Milk Industries, Premier Milk/FN Dairies, Nestle Products, New Zealand Milk Products and the Dumex (Malaysia) are constantly coming up with their own market promotional programs by introducing new and improved products and innovative packaging, in order to gain and maintain their market share. These companies often conduct product demonstrations and conduct sampling in shopping complexes and supermarkets. * Threat of new entrants The second model is the barrier to entry the industry. Where barriers to entry are high, the new entrants are likely to be deterred. While the low barriers generally mean that the responses will be slower and offering more opportunity. The barriers to entry the dairy industry are consider medium. The main barrier that the new entrant face would be the creation of strong brands of the competitors such as Nestle and Dutch Lady. * The bargaining power of suppliers This means the behaviour of supplier and their relative power which can squeeze industry profits. This power may affect MDI as most of the raw materials to produce the dairy products are imported from the foreign country such as Australia, Europe and US. Such countries are playing a major player in the world trade of dairy product and they may attempted to dominant the price of the raw material e.g. raises their price to the industry and hence take over part of the profit for themselves. * The bargaining power of buyers Buyers use their power to trade around the industry participant to gain lower prices or improvement to product quality will also affect profitability of MDI. The high standard of milk product that produced by MDI normally offers a lower price compare to other competitors and thus attract more consumer to buy it, for example the low fat of HL milk. * The threat of product substitutes The substitute products which bring the same need to satisfy consumer will bring down the purchases power of the milk product especially when the price move upwards. For example, when the price of the pasteurised milk move up, the customer may look for soya milk which is more cheaper and healthy than the pasteurised milk. In order to tackle the challenges and competitive environment and to expand the company business to the global market, planning consider the main action to MDI to decide where the company to be in the future and how to get it. In fact, the organization such as Shell, IBM, Royal LaPaige, Mazda and United Way have been undertaken a strategic planning exercise each year for reviewing their missions, goals, and plans to meet environment changes or the expectations of important stakeholders. Thus, planning is an important fundamental action for every organization to achieve their goals. There are four main stages in the planning process, which are the following. Establishing Objectives For planning purpose, it is necessary for MDI to define the companys objectives as to provide a sense of direction. The companys objectives are important because company exist for a purpose and such objectives define and state that purpose. Strategic or long-range planning therefore begins with the specification of the objectives towards which future operations should be directed. The attainment of objective also aimed to create the source of motivation and commitment among the employees because the companys goal will facilitate employees identification with the organisation and help motivate them by reducing uncertainty and clarifying what they should accomplish. The first objective that MDI should define is the mission of the company, which describes the broad purpose and its reason for existence, the nature of business and the customers it seek and satisfy. For instance, the business scope of MDI is manufacturing of dairy products. Meanwhile the purpose of the company is to improve the growing demands of the dairy products towards global economy. Another important objective which relate to the organisation as a whole is the corporate objectives. They are normally measurable and are expressed in financial terms such as desired profits or sales levels, return on capital employed, rate of growth or market share. It is important that senior managers of MDI understand clearly where their company is going and why and how their own role contributes to the attainment of corporate objectives. Once the overall objective of the company have been established they must be broken down into subsidiary objectives relating to areas such as product range, market segmentation, customer service etc. Identify Potential Strategies The following stage to the above is to identify a range of possible course of action or strategies that might enable the objectives of MDI to be achieved. Prior to developing strategies, it is necessary to undertake a strategic analysis to better understand the organisations present strategic situation. This involves SWOT analysis of MDI that assess companys strengths and weakness, opportunity and threats in relation to the internal and environmental factors. Once we understand the SWOT of the company, we will be able to identify alternative strategies for the company. The following are some of the strategic that MDI could be use. * Cost leadership This strategy is the aim at being the lowest cost producer in the industry. A firm that bases its competitive strategy on overall cost leadership must construct the most efficient facilities and obtain the largest share market so that its cost per unit is lowest in the industry. It has the ability to lower price in time of severe price competition and provides a cushion to defend profit levels against competitors. Therefore, experience with building the product is very important such as process of production, delivery and service, which lead to further their cost reductions. To bring the cost to the lowest, MDI have to reduce the import of the dairy raw material form foreign country and examining alternatives suppliers who will give the lowest price of ingredients to the company. MDI also can reduce costs through supporting research into new technologies, and using new technology to improve product value, and increasing productivity, and thus bring down the cost. Besides, the company also can use the incentive pay system in order to motivate worker to produce more of the dairy product. stevejacobs1991http://www.blogger.com/profile/06453104950734171691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2481730798355931484.post-44630243062834575092019-11-26T05:57:00.001-08:002019-11-26T05:57:05.326-08:00The Auto Pact essaysThe Auto Pact essays The auto pact is a trade agreement between Canada and the United States for automotive parts and vehicles. It is known as the most successful trade agreement, helping Canada become one of the worlds biggest automobile producing countries. This agreement allowed North American companies to import cars duty-free from anywhere in the world. It also guaranteed free trade of automobiles and parts between Canada and the US. This meant that manufacturers could locate their factory in either country, wherever the larger workforces is located or best location for shipping and sell their products to either country without having to worry about paying extra. The pact started because of Canada was spending more money buying American goods then Americans were buying Canadian goods. The government had to do something before it got even worse. The pact was made to fix this imbalance. This imbalance was mostly due to the automobile industry. Canada was importing more auto parts and automobiles from the States, then Canada was exporting. Talks for a trade agreement in the automobile industry between Canada and the United States began in July 1964. By January 1965 Prime Minister Lester Pearson and President Lyndon Johnson signed the pact. Of course with any agreement there were conditions that went along with it. The Canadian government wanted the number of cars brought into the country to equal the number of cars that were manufactured within Canada. This meant that the three large manufacturers: Ford, Chrysler and General Motors had to manufacture at least one vehicle for everyone brought into the country. Each car sold had to be at least 65% Canadian content. There was also a tax of 6.1% put on cars imported into the country, mostly from Japan, Germany and Britain. This pact did not only help Canada become one of the worlds biggest automobile producing countries that it did, but also tied Canadian and US closer together. My wish to transfer to Korea is based on the fact that I have faced several challenges in the United States that have had a negative impact on my education. I experienced nostalgia in America since I was in a new culture, new language and with no friends. The situation affected my education and social life. The loneliness caused depression, and I had to seek medical help. In my urge to excel in education, I sought help from my professor who gave me moral and academic support. The depression cost me dearly academically such that I registered a GPA of 2.34, which is the lowest in my university education. However, after medication and counseling, I improved notably to attain the current GPA of 2.72. The circumstances surrounding my studies in the United States are responsible for my poor performance. However, I demonstrated that I can perform better in a friendly environment. Transferring to Korea will eliminate the language problem and thus improve my understanding. Moreover, I prefer a Korean college life to the American life. My low GPA for last semester should not scatter my chance of transferring to Korea. Based on the above reasons, I implore you to consider the current GPA. stevejacobs1991http://www.blogger.com/profile/06453104950734171691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2481730798355931484.post-51551102364917120082019-11-19T06:02:00.001-08:002019-11-19T06:02:04.442-08:00Four components of an information system Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 wordsFour components of an information system - Essay Example Software consists of the programs and manuals written to run the hardware. Software process the instructions issued by humans and relay them to the hardware. Data is what is entered into the information system (Hurson 36). It can consist of numbers or words fed into the system through typing or other means. Humans are the people who issue commands and manage the system, while processes are the steps followed in running information system. For instance, when using a computer there is a defined procedure for switching it on or off, or performing other standard operations that help to run it. It is important to consider all the aforementioned components when designing an information system because they are the fundamental parts that make it work. It cannot run without any of these components, so it is quite obvious that they must feature in its design (Stair and Reynolds 13). For example, it would be useless to design a car without a steering wheel or a fuel tank because such parts make it what it is. Information systems are probably the most common aspect of human activities in the 21st century. People use information systems to make processes easier to execute, as well as to enhance their quality of life. It is expected that information systems will become more complex as time goes, embedding themselves deeper in our lives (Stair and Reynolds stevejacobs1991http://www.blogger.com/profile/06453104950734171691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2481730798355931484.post-39414377714320638122019-11-16T18:34:00.001-08:002019-11-16T18:34:08.400-08:00Academic Plagiarism - the Practices and Perceptions Essay Example for Free Academic Plagiarism the Practices and Perceptions Essay Plagiarism is a common concern in education, entertainment, and some parts of history. The Online Merriam Webster Dictionary (2012) defines plagiarism as ââ¬Å"the act of stealing and passing off the ideas or other words of another as oneââ¬â¢s own.â⬠This activity is unacceptable and is still performed. Because of this practice, however, researchers conducted surveys in several schools to comprehend this act of dishonesty. The reasons for the practice of cheating are complex but also essential to examine. See more: Ethnic groups and racism essay Brian Hansen (2003), a CQ Researcher in Combating Plagiarism, analyzed the practice of plagiarism among schools and the media. He states, ââ¬Å"The perception [among college professors] is that students are no longer learning about plagiarism adequately at a high-school level, so thereââ¬â¢s an education and re-education process that needs to take placeâ⬠(2003, p.777). Various students may not recognize their research as a dishonest activity because their professors may have not introduced the idea of plagiarism to them. Dominic A. Sisti (2007), a researcher regarding plagiarism, said ââ¬Å"student responses reflect a lack of clarity regarding what exactly their schoolââ¬â¢s policy says regarding copy-paste practicesâ⬠(2007, p. 225). Because of the lack of clarification, it is essential that professors give direct and comprehensive instructions for each student before he or she works. Patrick M. Scanlon and David R. Neumann (2002), two researchers who have also conducted surveys about plagiarism, noticed that the measures of incidence of cheating suggest a contradiction between what students say and do. ââ¬Å"Some [students] have argued that colleges and universities are not doing nearly enough to foster a commitment among students to academic honestyâ⬠(2002, p.376). The lack of acknowledgement is one of the leading causes for students to academically plagiarize. When students are unaware of the idea of plagiarism, they tend to complete their work without much concern or effort. Students may refer to term-paper purchasing websites or directly copy and paste from the web. In Hansenââ¬â¢s CQ reader, McCabe found that ââ¬Å"44 percent of the students considered minor, cut-and-paste Internet plagiarism as ââ¬Ëtrivialââ¬â¢ cheating or not cheating at allâ⬠(2003, p.778). This fact suggests that students do not have a standard of cheating. Sisti had also observed what students perceived as cheating. ââ¬Å"Their comments clearly indicated that they did not feel cheating was a significant concern. Further, statements by these students reinforced the findings of previous research that show cheating gets easier as students continue to cheat and that students are not really concerned about being caughtâ⬠(2007, p. 217). Among these students, they may feel the right to cheat because of the influence by others. In Scanlon and Neumannââ¬â¢s research, they state that ââ¬Å"Students consistently judged plagiarism by others to be more prevalent than their own self-reports would suggestâ⬠(2002, p.380). This means that the students viewed academically cheating common in their generation. The lack of concern between students and cheating is one of the few major sources of plagiarism. Another cause of academic plagiarism is because students feel that they cannot complete their task within the given amount of time. Among these students, they referred to the Internet for their research as their major source of information. Scanlon and Neumann share their concerns by stating that, ââ¬Å"university administrators, faculty, and staff should be concerned about the impact of the Internet in shaping a new generation of studentsââ¬â¢ conception of what does and does not constitute fair use of then countless texts so readily available at the click of a mouseâ⬠(2002, p. 374). ââ¬Å"The amount of online plagiarism reported here should be a matter of concern, although the current study does not point to an epidemic of Internet plagiarism. Academic dishonesty is most strongly associated with the perceptions of peersââ¬â¢ behaviorâ⬠(2002, p. 383). However, if teachers do use plagiarism-detection websites, students may still view plagiarism acceptable. Sisti concluded that ââ¬Å"students might incorrectly interpret the system feedback, believing that plagiarism is simply a degree of acceptable paraphrasing (2007, p. 228).â⬠This means that students will not only misunderstand their topics, but also lack future referencing and the meaning behind plagiarism. The Internet provided these students term-paper purchasing websites and complex reading which directs them to cheat. Therefore, educators must be aware of studentsââ¬â¢ uses of the Internet when resorted for academic research. Fortunately, there are plagiarism-detection soft wares available for teachersââ¬â¢ use. However, teachers who rely on these programs must initially teach their students the proper way to do their research and how to cite their sources if they choose to quote or paraphrase. If more students become aware of this problematic behavior and if teachers show greater concern, then it is very possible for the plagiarizing activity to minimize. Many people who plagiarize may not be aware of this kind of cheating. Hansen (2003) states that ââ¬Å"The perception [among college professors] is that students are no longer learning about plagiarism adequately at a high-school level, so there is an education and re-education process that needs to take placeâ⬠(p. 777). Because of this, several professors experienced great consequences by responding to academic cheating. Hansen was concerned if the Internet played a major role towards academic plagiarism; because of its existence, few teachers refer to plagiarism detection programs such as turnitin.com. Another concern that Hanson addressed was how news organizations did not sufficiently guard against plagiarism used in the media. He, then, concluded that plagiarism has not dramatically change in comparison to book text copying and Internet plagiarism. Plagiarism. (2012). Merriam-Webster.com/. Scanlon and David R. Neumann (2002) to survey students about partaking in such activity. The focus of the survey was to assess studentsââ¬â¢ perceptions and practices. In Scanlon and Neumannââ¬â¢s study, they address that studentsââ¬â¢ perception on peer behavior, their facultiesââ¬â¢ ethical views, and their awareness of institutional sanctions greatly contribute to their reasons to plagiarize (p. 375). Students are vulnerable to what others may think and not fully understand the consequences of plagiarism. In other words, they also feel that it is more acceptable to copy from the Internet if their peers are also plagiarizing. Students who participated in this study were to confront the eight different types of plagiarism as self-reports. Scanlon and Neumann analyzed that the Internet will not affect the way one writes or performs his research. Sisti D. A, (2007). How do high school students justify Internet plagiarism? He merely focused on Internet plagiarism, which includes the copy and paste method and term paper purchasing. The top reason why students resorted to academic dishonesty was because of the limited time given to complete their research. According to Sisti, ââ¬Å"The results indicated that students were more easily able to justify copy-paste plagiarism for a variety of reasons that mirror justifications of other forms of conventional plagiarismâ⬠(p. 215). In other words, the students felt that copying and pasting was a better option than term paper purchasing because of the less risk of getting caught. In addition to Sistiââ¬â¢s research, he exclaimed that students would admit that they felt confused by a professorââ¬â¢s instruction which directed them to plagiarize. Due to this fact, Sisti offered educators several strategies for managing academic dishonesty stevejacobs1991http://www.blogger.com/profile/06453104950734171691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2481730798355931484.post-40085246777563925522019-11-14T07:06:00.001-08:002019-11-14T07:06:04.514-08:00The Three Witches in Macbeth Essay -- William ShakespeareThe three witches in the tragedy Macbeth are introduced right at the beginning of the play. The scene opens with the witches chanting three prophesies: Macbeth will be Thane of Cawdor, Thane of Glamis and King. These prophesies introduce Macbeth to his plan of defeat and to over power. Macbeth will eventually follow through in killing king Duncan. Some people believe that the witches had the ability to reverse the order of things. This brings into the play idea of fate and the role with which it has in the play. One can only wonder if Macbeth ever had a chance of doing what was right after he met with the witches. It is however, more realistic to believe that Macbeth was responsible for his own actions throughout the play and in the end, he was the one who made the final decisions. The witches could see the future, they could add temptation, and influence Macbeth, but they could not control his destiny. No one can change the destiny of ones life nor can anyone tell the destiny of ones life. Macbeth creates his own sadness when he is driven by his own sense of guilt. He realized what he did was immoral and he cant stand the thought. This causes him to become insecure about his actions which causes him to commit more murders. The witches are great at intriguing, but in the end, it is each individuals decision to fall for the temptation, or to be strong enough to resist their captivation. Thatââ¬â¢s where Macbeth messed up, he didnââ¬â¢t trust himself enough and wasnââ¬â¢t confident enough in himself to know what the right thing was. The three Witches are only responsible for giving Macbeth the ideas and for forming ideas in Macbethââ¬â¢s head. They are not responsible for h... ... is warned about the truth of the witches prophesies, he is tempted and refuses to listen to reason from Banquo. Macbeth blames the witches for deceiving him with half truths. While the witches are not totally responsible for the actions of Macbeth, they are responsible for introducing the ideas to Macbeth which in turn fired up Macbeth's ambition and led to a disastrous And unnecessary chain of events. The story of Macbeth teaches us many lessons in life. The lesson that stuck out to me is to be your own person. Macbeth let other people control him and lead him. He didnââ¬â¢t make decisions for himself nor did he follow his heart in everything he did. He was just thinking about what the witches and Lady Macbeth wanted. When you live your life for other people your really not living. Macbeth taught me a lot of lessons that I will continue to use throughout my life. stevejacobs1991http://www.blogger.com/profile/06453104950734171691noreply@blogger.com0
